Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum Hosts Retired Smithsonian Historian

Lonn Taylor, retired museum curator and historian at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC was in Cuero, Thursday evening, November 3rd to present, "My Love is a Rider: America's Affair with the Cowboy."

Mr. Taylor's presentation to a standing room only crowd, was held at 6:00 p.m. in Cuero State Bank's Community Room, and was hosted by the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum, with both the Cuero Cultural and Heritage Foundation and Humanities Texas serving as partners in this historic review of the American Cowboy.

The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum, established in 2002, is a new museum project dedicated to preserving the ranching and western culture of South Central Texas through interpretive exhibits, research, and educational programs.

The museum purchased the two-story, 10,000 sq. ft. historic Knights of Pythias Hall in Cuero in 2002, and is currently restoring the building to its original 1903 appearance.

Mr. Taylor is a retired museum curator and historian who moved to Fort Davis in 2002 after 18 years as a historian and curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. He is originally from Fort Worth, and before going to Washington, he served as director of the University of Texas at Austin's Winedale Historical Center in Round Top. Since moving to Fort Davis, Mr. Taylor has served as a consultant on exhibit planning to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Alamo, and the cities of Grapevine and San Antonio.

The public was invited to attend this free event where light food and beverages were served. Cuero State Bank is located at 121 East Courthouse Street, adjacent to the DeWitt County Courthouse.

This program was made possible in part by a grant from Humanities Texas, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
