Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum
"Ag Appreciation Day
DeWitt County Farm Bureau, the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum and the
Cuero Chamber of Commerce sponsored National Agriculture
Awareness Day on March 23 at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum building.
Some outdoor activities were viewing of live Longhorn steers,
horses and chuckwagons. Some indoor exhibits included the CTHM
building of Bucky's Sager's Cowboy Gear, J.C. Hunnam Indian
Artifacts, and N.A. Steen's Barbed wire.
Chisholm Trail Museum used this event to kick off its Legend
of the Longhorn campaign. The museum received a donation from Lovel
Blain and the Crozier family of a real Texas Longhorn with
beautifully symmetrical horns. He had lived a long life in DeWitt
County, but was not well and he was eventually to be memorialized
in a full mount and display in the Chisholm Trail Museum. The museum
also conducted a contest for seventh graders at Cuero Junior
High School to name the Longhorn, who was ultimately dubbed "Thornton".
Students suggested a name and
explained why they felt that their name should be chosen. The winner
received a gift certificate to The Longhorn Restaurant and was
announced in the Cuero Record on March 21.
Shown is the Longhorn donated by Lovel Blain and the Crozier family. Cuero
Junior High seventh graders participated in a contest to help name the Longhorn,
who was ultimately dubbed "Thorton". The Chisholm Trail Heritage Museum celebrated
National Agricultural Awareness Day on March 23 and used the event to kick
off its Legend of the Longhorn Campaign.
